Fresh food sell out to the nuclear industry

16 November 2012

The irradiation of all tomatoes and capsicums, as post-harvest fruit fly control, is the subject of application A1069 to Food Standards Australia NZ. Many more fruits and vegetables are set to follow. This will greatly increase public health risks and compromise nutritional value. Yet, benign pre-market management and other systems are ignored. Health Ministers have decided that the present mandatory labelling of all irradiated foods will be reviewed in 2014 and it is then expected to end.

Fidelity Investments promos on YouTube

10 May 2012

Synthetic biology promo on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xArETjua30 2.26min) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpVymZsUVfs&feature=relmfu (30 second summary)

Synthetic biology is a set of radical new genetic manipulation (GM) techniques, to use Nature as a “manufacturing platform” and DNA as patentable raw material. Craig Venter recently created the first synthetic microbe ever built from scratch. Now Fidelity Investments see more new life forms being created in the lab than the 1.7 million organisms found in Nature. Their lego view of the world sees life as ‘biobricks’. They conclude, “Nothing has the power to change how we live more than changing life itself.”

The failed promises of existing GM techniques – e.g. goat milk with spider silk, bigger fish and anti-malarial drugs – are the basis for claims that SynBio is just an extension of GM, so relax. Nothing is further from the truth.

OGTR's summary of the issues raised in submissions received from the public on the consultation for RARMP for DIR 113

10 May 2012

The OGTR has responded: “The applicant for licence DIR 113 is Bayer CropScience Pty Ltd, an Australian proprietary company limited by shares.”

Ignoring the parent company's behaviour globally was clearly not parliament’s intention and the law needs amendment.

The OGTR has issued the licence here
