WA's GM-free competitive advantage sacrificed
The Western Australian government exempted commercial GM canola from its ban on genetically manipulated (GM) crops, on the eve of Australia Day. Monsanto's Roundup tolerant canola may be grown unrestricted and unregulated throughout WA if the exemption stands.
GM-free supporters will continue to work with WA parliamentarians to disallow the exemption order when it comes up for review. Gene Ethics continues to fully inform and encourage MPs with data needed to reject the exemption.
GM Ban Extended in Tasmania
Tasmania's ban on the release of GM organisms to the environment will continue for at least another five years under a new law. The Minister for Primary Industries and Water, David Llewellyn, said that the State's GM-free status is a key factor in the Tasmanian Brand.
