Patent Amendment (Human Genes and Biological Materials) Bill 2010

Submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee, February 2011

The Patent Amendment (Human Genes and Biological Materials) Bill 2010 is a much needed piece of legislation. Fresh food sell out to the nuclear industry

The irradiation of all tomatoes and capsicums, as post-harvest fruit fly control, is the subject of application A1069 to Food Standards Australia NZ. Many more fruits and vegetables are set to follow. This will greatly increase public health risks and compromise nutritional value. Yet, benign pre-market management and other systems are ignored. Health Ministers have decided that the present mandatory labelling of all irradiated foods will be reviewed in 2014 and it is then expected to end.
